My Favorite Movies

Well, I think I’ve got too much time and nothing to blog about. You see, I love movies, but not to the extend of studying it as my profession of course, so I decided to come out with a list of my favorite movies. Movies that are rated a perfect 10 in my imdb list. I’ll only give a rough summary on why I like them, not gonna make a whole long review. I’ll update this page everytime I get a new 10. In no particular order, they are:

Spirited Away

Spirited Away is my favorite animation movie. I remember watching it when it first came out and it instantly became one of my favorites. Shrek and Finding Nemo were really good too but incomparable with this amazing Japanese art. Miyazaki made a great movie with a very smooth story line which mixes humor, fantasy, drama altogether.

Pianist

The Pianist is one of my favorite war movies. The Pianist tells the true story of a brilliant Polish pianist who had to endure hardship during the German occupation during WW2. Great acting by Adrien Brody, amazing cinematography with some gory scenes and the sound mixing complements the graphics very well. Very touching too.

Monty

Monty Phyton & The Holy Grail, my favorite British movie. This movie is timeless with its humor. You can watch it time and time again and it’ll still get you. Life Of Brian and Snatch were good British movies too but Holy Grail is just classic. One of the best comedy movies ever made.

12

12 Angry Men is one of the best classics ever. The story about 12 juries trying to decide whether a young boy is guilty of murder. While the evidence certainly doesn’t favor the accused, one jury believe that there should be a thorough discussion of the case and there it started, 90 minutes of an amazing plot, acting and it really keeps you glued to the screen all the time.

fight

Fight Club is definitely David Fincher’s best. This is one of the best mindfcuk movies I’ve seen. I can assure you in decades to come, Fight Club would be recognized as one the best movies ever made. Superb acting by Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Fight Club is not just about the twist, style and effects but it’s a philosophy of life. Great movie.

Kane

Citizen Kane is regarded by some, the greatest classic ever and it is no exaggeration. Well, most of you might not have heard about this classic and I have to say this movie is totally revolutionary. The framing, the direction, and also the screenplay is just amazing for a 1941 piece. This film tracks the life of Charles Foster Kane, newspaperman extraordinaire, collector of riches, failed politician, husband, father and lover. This movie is full of depth and meaning. A must watch.

memento

Memento is amazing. Talk about a twist in the end, it is the best mindfcuk movie I’ve seen. It’s not that hard to understand but it’s just a superb movie that mixes the timeline as its most powerful element and when it all ends, you’ll be left nothing but gaze in awe. Memento puts you in a first person’s view, putting you in the same shoes as the confused Lenny. You never know what’s happening next, keeps you in the fastlane the entire time. Honestly I feel this is the best movie of the 21st century.

oldboy

Oldboy is the best asian movie I’ve watched so far. This Korean thriller is one that has disturbed me for awhile with it’s plot. The story of a man who was sent to jail without any reason. When he’s released after 15 years, he seeks to find out about his captor and in this process, he finds out a dark secret about the past. Really really disturbing but damn good movie.

matrix

The Matrix is self explanatory really. Who doesn’t love The Matrix? I’ve watched it about 7 times and it remains as my most watched movie. Superb effects, both sound and visual. That alone is enough to regard it as one of the best movie ever. Revolutionary I would say. And the idea of the matrix is just mind-boggling stuff.

sd

While many may have the first or the third series of the LOTR trilogy as their favorite, mine is actually the second, The Lord Of The Rings:The Two Towers. I feel its very under-rated. The Two Towers has more action, the battle at Helms Deep was really good. Plus the birth of the Uruk-Hai was pretty cool too. The other 2 series was brilliant as well, but The Two Towers gets my vote as the best among all.

Spirited Away

Like the LOTR series, my favorite Star Wars episode is the 2nd installment of the original trilogy, Star Wars:The Empire Strikes Back. I think it has more action, a more riveting story line and better suspense. Plus the revelation of Darth Vader’s identity was really surprising and they made the ending really well too, a nice build up for the last episode. I can’t deny EP 4 and 6 were brilliant too but Empire Strikes Back beats em’ all.

Spirited Away

Lawrence Of Arabia is a powerful film about the true story of T.E Lawrence who helped the Arabs to defeat the Turks in 1916. It’s brilliant in all ways. The score is timely and dramatic, the cinematography is amazing, and a very commanding performance by Peter O’ Toole. And it all cooks into perfection under the superb directing of David Lean. Like other great directors, he manage to make a 220 minutes movie a stroll in the park. A very entertaining and groundbreaking movie. Highly recommended.

godfather

The Godfather is the one of the greatest movie ever made. The story of Vito Corleone, the don of the mafia families and his legacy. This movie comprises a very strong performance by the cast and a very solid flow in the story line. This movie is almost flawless in all ways, and it’ll be one of those that will grow with time. Everyone, should watch The Godfather in their lifetime.

aw

I’m beginning to love the Godfather series, which explains my admiration for The Godfather: Part 2. The Godfather saga continues with Vito’s son, Michael Corleone trying to expand the family business in Cuba, and Vegas. In parallel, the movie also portrays the life of young Vito on his way to become a don. The Godfather series really set the standard of a quailty great flick, something that Hollywood is lacking today. A brilliant and well written screenplay, intense acting by Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro really sums it all. It’s hard to compare this with the first one. both are masterpieces. My advice, get the trilogy Godfather series. Worth every penny.

pulp

Pulp Fiction is one those movies that brings you in a roller coaster ride, with you trying to expect when the next slope will come. Easily Tarantino’s best production. An original film with a string of good cast makes this a masterpiece in the filming industry. Pulp Fiction is refreshing every time you watch it and you’ll never get tired of watching it. Superb movie.

city

City Of God is about the story of 2 boys growing up in a violent neighborhood in Rio De Janeiro, with both taking different paths in life. City Of God possesses visually stunning cinematography and editing and it never fails to fill you with amazement. You get to see bloodshed, gunshots, and violence in the movie and it all blends well with superb directing by Fernando Meirelles. One of the best mob and gangster movies ever made.

eter

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind is the story of a man who found out his girlfriend went for a memory loss operation to forget him and he’s out to find out why. This is definitely the most sophisticated romance movie I’ve watched. This movie is made in a non-linear fashion and it’s a really beautiful movie to watch. I definitely think this is Jim Carrey’s and Kate Winslet’s best performance. Nice to see the chemistry between the two in this movie.

Schindler

Schindler’s List is Spielberg’s best, no doubt about it. Forget about Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan, this is the deal. The true story of Oscar Schindler, a German businessman who owns a factory. He witnesses the horrifying deaths of the Holocaust and the toll it takes on the Jewish people. Eventually, he creates a list of over 1000 Jews whom he saves from death to work for him. Such a brilliant and touching film, it almost brought me to tears, it’s a real sad movie, one of the greatest masterpiece ever made.

Schindler

American Beauty, a very thought provoking drama of the modern life. I remember watching it few years ago and I did it again today. American Beauty has to be one of the best movies produced in the last 10 years. Such a strong cast and solid performance by them. Kevin Spacey and Annette Benning stole the show for me. This movie revolves around a depressed suburban father who is in a mid-life crisis with problems with his career and his family. He searches for the American Dream and got himself messed up. This dark comedic drama is colorful in many ways, exposing the lives of different individuals in search for true happiness. In the end, this movie is just so beautiful. I loved it a lot!

jk

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is a brilliant classic. The story about 3 gunmen seeking a hidden treasure, and that’s how the adventure and action begins. Clint Eastwood really look different when he’s young, so composed and cool. This movie defines the Western movies genre. I’ve seen many cowboy-like movies but none can compare with this classic. The score has to be one of the best I’ve seen. It syncronized really well with the action. The acting were brilliant, all 3 of the main actors and the directing was sublime, very solid all the way to the end. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is witty, sad, fun, action-packed, adventurous and in 1 word-EXCELLENT!

casa

Casablanca, a masterpiece of art. If there was one film to depict the meaning of love, it’ll be this. I didn’t really enjoyed this movie the first time but after re-watching it, I have to agree Casablanca is one of the best movies ever made. This movie influenced many movies we see today. Quotes from the movie still lives, “We’ll always have Paris” has to be the most famous. Like many classics, this movie is almost flawless in all ways. Romantic yet heartbreaking. Simple yet powerful. A 1941 movie with great directing, acting and script, and that’s what I call a timeless classic.

Spirited Away

The ultimate mob movie, Goodfellas. If you’re into gangster/mob kinda movies, this should be heaven. A Martin Scorsese production and it’s almost a perfect masterpiece. I think Goodfellas was really groundbreaking in some ways. Scorsese edited and directed it really well, mixes it with the soundtrack, followed by some brilliant performances by the leading cast and top it off with some dark witty humor. I really enjoyed Goodfellas. In a way, it also influenced the movies of this genre in the filming industry. Easily one of the best films in the 90′s.

Raging Bull. It follows the career of middleweight boxing champion Jake LaMotta (DeNiro) as his career progresses but his emotional problems worsen. There’re so many things to love about Raging Bull. There’s no doubt this is Scorsese’ best, no doubt. Superb directing all the way. The editing is brilliant, nice cameraworks, excellent fight scenes with some really intense and breathtaking shots. Deniro and Pesci’s acting is top class, you feel for them and they really formed a formidable pair. The score is just so timely and brilliant, just lovely watching this movie with the score accompaniment. And the most important element of this movie is the color. It’s done is black and white, similar to Schindler’s List and it gave a very powerful impact. I really love this movie, really worth every penny to watch it. A deep emotional story of a boxer.
