I always thought Stanley Kubrick as a weird director. Albeit the artistic movies that he had produced in his lifetime, I was never his greatest fan. I’ve watched some of his highly rated movies like A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket and I gotta say that they’re really weird. Dr. Strangelove was funny and decent though. Today I had the chance to watch another Kubrick piece, the movie that changed my perspective of his works.
The movie:
Surreal. That’s how I would describe this movie in a word. Kubrick showed that he’s one of the best directors that had ever lived through his superb style of directing. In 2001, he uses the camera to delve the audience into a psycological journey in space. So often you hear silence in this movie, as though you’re in real space, only the still images moving in slow-mo. Captivating. The effects used in this movie is awesome. The colors and effects, really revolutionary stuff at that time.
This movie paved the way for more sci-fi films like Star Wars, Star Trek, Apollo 13 and the most recent, Sunshine. They were, in a way influenced by 2001, like it or not. They were all brilliant in their own ways but 2001: A Space Odyssey has to be the most original sci-fi movie ever made.
To really appreciate Kubrick’s works, one MUST watch this movie. I totally adore his works right now. Kubrick is not only one of the best directors, he’s one of the boldest and different. A gem in the filming industry. If you’re a sci-fi fan, I can assure you this movie won’t dissapoint.
